Episode 39: Jeffrey Cernohous, PhD - Executive Advisor of Infinite & COO of Interfacial, a Nagase Company

Additive manufacturing and materials science innovator Dr. Jeffrey Cernohous shares the story of Infinite Material Solutions, and the highly unique support and build materials for 3D printing that they offer such as Aquasys and Caverna. He also discusses the launch of EMPOWR3D, an innovation center for additive manufacturing (AM) services. PLUS BONUS INTERVIEW: this includes a follow-up conversation that took place at TCT Rapid 2022.

One of the key components of their Aquasys and Caverna lines is the natural sweetener trehalose, which can be found in honey and mushrooms. In 2000 Hayashibara, one of NAGASE’s group companies, identified a means of producing it using starch, and Dr. Cernohous speaks of NAGASE’s surprise and interest to discover that this sugar replacement food additive from Japan can also play a functional role in Additive Manufacturing. Listen to the episode to learn more about the unique adhesive and stability offered by these materials.

Dr. Cernohous: “Support material is a key enabler of creating parts that don’t exist today, and there’s no other way to manufacture them that we’re aware of. And so, instead of just looking at support material as something that holds up your simple shape, consider the exciting things that you can create by thinking of support material as a key component in the design.”
